AMMA Past Treasurer (2017–2023), Captain Ian Young AM RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1998 as a Medical Officer after transferring from the Canadian Forces, where he had served from 1990 to 1998. His first posting was to HMAS Cerberus, and he was then posted to HMAS Penguin at the Submarine and Underwater Medicine Unit. In 2002 he pursued a surgical career and qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon in February 2008.
Captain Young has held positions as Director Fleet Health at Fleet Headquarters (2022–2024), Director Specialist Medical Capability for the Navy (2019–2022), Director of Clinical Services for the Maritime Operational Health Unit (2017–2018), Director Clinical Services for the ANZAC Role 2E hospital in Taji, Iraq (2016), and Senior Health Officer (J07) for the Australian Headquarters in the Middle East (2012). He has deployed as an orthopaedic surgeon in the NATO Role 3 hospital in Baghdad (2020–2021) and Kandahar (2012), and in the Netherlands Role 2E hospital in Tarin Kowt (2010), and has served in HMA Ships Warramunga, Manoora, Kanimbla, Choules, Canberra and Adelaide.
Appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in the Australia Day 2019 Honours List, he holds degrees of Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine and Master of Health Administration, and is a Fellow of the RACGP, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He transferred to Navy Reserves in January 2024 and is Deputy Director of Surgery for Peninsula Health in Melbourne. A member of AMMA since 1999, he has been on Council since 2017 — initially as Treasurer and, since October 2023, as President. He has a strong interest in genealogy and the Scottish-Australian community, and is married with four adult children.
