Scholarships – Applications now open for Conference Scholarships
AMMA is committed to supporting the growth of the military medicine and veterans’ health sectors. This includes providing significant financial assistance to its members and supporters who are undertaking research in these areas, or who wish to attend the annual Conference to further their scientific, professional or academic knowledge.
Please note: all awards and scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Association Council. In years where there are no suitable recipients, the awards and scholarships will not be awarded
AMMA Conference Scholarships
3 x Defence Force Other Ranks Conference Scholarships
Three Conference Scholarships will be awarded to Health Service members of the Australasian Region Defence Force (Permanent or Reserves) who are not commissioned officers. One scholarship will be awarded to a member of each Service (Army, Navy, Air Force).
Each scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who submits the best paper on any subject related to military medicine or veterans’ health. This can include those submitted to the Journal in the last twelve months.
The Conference Scientific Committee will determine the award of the scholarships based on criteria that it sets. Applicants for the scholarships must submit their papers to the Association Secretariat by 31 July of the Conference year.
The scholarship will consist of one full registration to the AMMA Conference that year and one return economy airfare from the recipient’s nearest Australian capital city to the conference location. With the approval of Council, attendance may be held over to a subsequent Conference.
Applicants must agree to publish their paper in JMVH. Applicants must not have previously been awarded a Defence Force Other Ranks Conference Scholarship.
*In lieu of return economy flights, recipients travelling from outside Australia will receive $AUD1000 toward their costs of travel.
3 x Health Student Conference ScholarshipsThree Conference Scholarships will be awarded to those who are undertaking a course of study at tertiary level in a health or health-related discipline with a focus on military medicine, veterans’ health, or related field.
Each scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who submits the best paper on any subject related to military medicine or veterans’ health. This paper may be one submitted to the Journal in the preceding 12 months but applicants must still apply officially.
The Conference Scientific Committee will determine the award of the scholarships based on criteria that it sets. Applicants for the scholarships must submit their papers to the Association Secretariat by 31 July of the Conference year.
The scholarship will consist of one full registration to the AMMA Conference that year and one return economy airfare from the recipient’s nearest capital city to the conference location. With the approval of Council, attendance may be held over to a subsequent Conference.
Applicants must agree to publish their paper in JMVH if it has not already been published.
Applicants must not have previously been awarded a Health Student Conference Scholarship.

3 x Defence Force Junior Officer Conference Scholarships
Three Conference Scholarships will be awarded to Health Service members of the Australasian Region Defence Force officer rank O3 (Navy LEUT, Army CAPT, Air Force FLTLT) and below.
One scholarship will normally be awarded to a member of each Service (Army, Navy, Air Force).
Each scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who submits the best paper on any subject related to military medicine or veterans’ health. This can include those submitted to the Journal in the last twelve months.
The Conference Scientific Committee will determine the award of the scholarships based on criteria that it sets. Applicants for the scholarships must submit their papers to the Association Secretariat by 31 July of the Conference year.

Conference Awards
Weary Dunlop Award
$750
The Australasian Military Medicine Association is committed to supporting military medicine, and as a result, present the Weary Dunlop Award for the best original presentation given at the annual Conference. The award is open to all presenters at the Conference and is named in honour of Sir Edward “Weary” Dunlop, who passed away in 1993.
The award prize is $750 and publication of the paper in the association’s journal; Journal of Military and Veterans’ Health. It is open to all presenters, whether or not they are members of AMMA and must be an original presentation to which they have intellectual property rights. Delegates must advise if they wish to be considered for this prize.
Best Presentation by a Junior Officer
$500
This Award is open to any junior ranked officer from any Service presenting at the AMMA Conference. For presentations where there is more than one presenter, both presenters must be junior ranked officers to be eligible. If a presentation with multiple presenters is deemed the best presentation, the award and prize money will be presented to the group.
Presenters nominating for this category will have their eligibility confirmed by Council before their name is added to the voting form.
Best New Presenter
$500
This Award is open to any presenter at the AMMA Conference who has not previously presented at an AMMA Conference, workshop, or symposium.
For presentations where there is more than one presenter, both presenters must be new presenters. If a presentation with multiple presenters is deemed the best presentation, the award and prize money will be presented to the group.
Presenters nominating for this category will have their eligibility confirmed by Council before their name is added to the voting form.
Best Other Ranked Presenter
$500
This Award is open to any Other Ranked presenter.
For presentations where there is more than one presenter, both presenters must be other ranked. If a presentation with multiple presenters is deemed the best presentation, the award and prize money will be presented to the group.
Presenters nominating for this category will have their eligibility confirmed by Council before their name is added to the voting form.
Conference Poster Award
$250
The Conference Poster award is open to those whose abstracts have been accepted as a Poster submission. It is open to all presenters, whether or not they are members of AMMA and must be an original presentation to which they have intellectual property rights.
PLEASE NOTE
A presenter cannot win more than one award for a single presentation. However, if the author presents multiple presentations, each one can be judged separately for each relevant category.
In the event a single presentation is the winner of multiple categories, it is at the discretion of the Council as to how the awards will be allocated.
Journal (JMVH) Awards
JMVH Best Military Health Paper
$750
The JMVH Prize for the Best Military Health Paper is awarded for the best original paper on military health published in each volume of the Journal (constituting the issues published in the calendar year preceding the year of the award).
JMVH Best Veterans’ Health Paper
$750
The JMVH Prize for the Best Veteran’s Health Paper is awarded for the best original paper on veterans’ health published in each volume of the Journal (constituting the issues published in the calendar year preceding the year of the award).
JMVH Best New Author Paper
$750
The JMVH Prize for the Best New Author Paper is awarded for the best original paper published in each volume of the Journal (constituting the issues published in the calendar year preceding the year of the award) by a first (lead) author who has not previously published as the first (lead) author of a paper in the Journal.
Conditions
The JMVH Editorial Board will determine the criteria and method for determining the award of the prizes, and reserves the right not to award prizes in one or more categories.
An original paper is one that comprises original research by the author/s and that is published in any of the following sections of JMVH: Original Papers, Short Communications, Case Studies, Review Articles, History, Commentaries.
Membership of the Australasian Military Medicine Association is not a requirement for granting of the JMVH Best Military Health, JMVH Best Veterans’ Health or JMVH Best New Author Paper Prizes.
All Prizes will be announced at the conclusion of the Annual Scientific Conference and notified in the JMVH issue following the conclusion of the Scientific Conference.
Recipients will be eligible for one award only per year.
